Since July 1st, 2003, all level measurement devices marketed in the European community and intended to be used in explosive atmospheres must be ATEX certified to meet the requirements of the European directive ATEX 2014/34/EU. It should be noted that it is the operator's sole responsibility to determine, before any installation, whether their production/operation site is located in an explosive risk zone. Explosive atmospheres formed by combustible gases, vapors and dusts are often encountered in chemical production plants, hydrocarbon facilities, bioethanol plants, as well as in river, fecal and black water that produce gases.

However, a non-hazardous zone can become an explosive risk area. Here is an example: In summer, water becomes scarce. The rare rainwater carries pollutants along its path. As a result, storm basins and other receptacles for urban effluents find themselves in the presence of high concentrations of pollutants causing an almost permanent explosive risk. It is therefore strongly recommended to take no risks in this area, as the consequences can be disastrous.
