ATMI's commitment to biodiversity

For several years, ATMI has embedded its environmental approach in tangible, measurable and meaningful actions. Beyond its industrial activities, the company has chosen to support environmental initiatives capable of bringing teams together, raising awareness of ecological issues and ensuring long-term commitment.

It is with this in mind that ATMI subscribed, from October 2019 to December 2022, to a corporate beehive project with BEEOPIC, a specialist in urban beekeeping, which later became ALVEOLE.

Why beehives in the company?

Bees play an essential role in preserving biodiversity and in the balance of ecosystems. By hosting beehives on or near its sites, ATMI wanted to:

  • raise awareness among its employees of the fundamental role of pollinators
  • involve teams in a concrete environmental project
  • give meaning to its CSR policy through a visible and educational action
  • create opportunities for exchange and knowledge sharing about living things
  • promote this approach to its partners and customers

ATMI's beehives preserve the environment

The project was based on the installation of two beehives with complete management by the partner beekeeper. ATMI benefited from a secure system compliant with regulations, without internal operational burden.

The apiary maintenance involved approximately 15 visits per year, with careful monitoring of the colonies' well-being, their dynamics and rapid intervention in case of difficulty. From March to September, the hives were checked approximately every 12 days, then once a month during the winter period.

When biodiversity helps cohesion

One of the strong points of the system lay in the educational and event-based dimension of the project. Employees could participate in:

  • practical beekeeping training
  • activities and events organized each year
  • discovering how a hive works and the beekeeper's role

The harvest took place in July, with honey potted (125 g to 1 kg), delivered in October. The jars could be personalized with labels in the company's colors, to be offered to employees, customers or partners.

Regular monitoring completed the whole, with quarterly reports on the apiary's evolution and several annual newsletters.

This collaboration enabled ATMI to carry out, for more than three years, a unifying and meaningful action. It helped to strengthen internal awareness of environmental issues and to create a different connection between the company, its teams and living things.

However, following BEEOPIC's merger with a Canadian group, the approach and conditions offered evolved. These changes no longer corresponded to ATMI's ethics or its budget framework. The company therefore chose to end it at the end of 2022, fully consistent with its values.

The corporate beehive experience was a structuring step in a CSR approach. It illustrates ATMI's desire to act concretely for the environment, while remaining true to its principles and long-term vision.

ATMI still keeps honey jars, have you received yours?
